This month at P.L.O.W. we are will be digging deep into the theology of living green. In our five-week series we will examine what the Bible has to say about taking care of the earth, why eating local foods may be one of the most important moral issues of the day, how worms are the best garbage disposals, and practical ways our congregation can keep Park Lake clean and green.

What is being Done? In the first nine months of 2008, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has provided relief and recovery assistance for thirty-five disasters in forty presbyteries in the United States alone. Hurricane Ike has once again called the faithful PDA volunteers and staff to Texas and Louisiana to help in assessing the damage and channeling aid to the places where it is most needed. PDA response teams are already at work in Galveston, Beaumont, Orange, Port Natchez, Lake Charles, Houston, San Antonio, and elsewhere. Early assessments call for $750,000 to meet immediate needs and up to ten times that amount for long-term recovery efforts. Your help is urgently needed. |

Dear Park Lake parents and Grandparents,
As a mission activity for the children of Park Lake decorated canvas bags at PLOW on September 10th to donate to children in a local homeless shelter. The “Welcome Bags” hold all of the things that you might want if you were away from home. We are asking the families of Park Lake to donate the items or cash to help with this activity. We will be collecting the items at our next PLOW on September 17th and putting them in the bags during PLOW. We had a small group of kids on Wednesday, only 5 so this is not going to be a large scale project at this point in time. Helen is looking into what shelter would like to recieve this gift. |

Park Lake Presbyterian Church has an annual tradition of inviting members and friends of the church to write devotions for others to use for reflection during the Advent Season, the 4-week period preceding Christmas. Beginning with a theme, an assigned scripture text, followed by a paragraph of personal reflection and wrapped up with prayer, these devotions are a great way to start the day and wonderful way to embrace the holy season. |

I heard an wonderful arrangement of "Holy Manna" earlier this week at the meeting of Central Florida Presbytery. As the choir sang, the juxtaposition of the texts, "Brethren we have met to worship" and "I'm glad to be a Christian", caught my attention. I'm always glad for the opportunity to worship. The beauty of songs, hymns, praise, and prayers to God are always renewing to me. But the declaration "I'm glad to be a Christian" caught me off guard. Am I glad to be a Christian? Are you? Why? |
