Daily Scripture Readings for Lent 2015
Jeremiah 9:23-24; Mark 2:18-22; I Corinthians 1:18-31
Mark’s passage is all about timing. Know the times: is it time for celebrating, or mourning? Is it time for feasting, or fasting? Abundance or forgoing that slice of Nothing Bundt Cake? Is it time for bringing in the new, or time for recycling and reviving what is old?
Where are we this Lent, the forty-days that remind us of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness? Traditionally, Lent has been a season of “giving something up,” a vice or sinful habit. Today some people experiment with “taking something on,” like a new spiritual practice during Lent. Perhaps one size doesn’t fit all.
If we’ve been hiding our light under a bushel, maybe Lent is a time to step up, speak up, jump in!
If we’ve been misleading ourselves and others that our weakness is having too much chocolate, when really it is holding on to too many grudges, what is Lent but a time to address this in faith?
The light of Christ shines through us not in our wisdom, but in our “foolish” reliance on God’s grace. This Lent, may the Holy Spirit show us clearly what time it is in our lives, and what this time in our lives is for.
