Daily Scripture Readings for Lent 2015
” The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem”
Our devotions for the Season of Lent come from the Daily Scripture readings of the Book of Common Prayer.
As I read this scripture, I can’t help but think of the Lord’s house at Park Lake which is undergoing a face lift. Pews and rails are being rearranged and some are being removed. Carpet is being ripped out. We are holding our breath in hopes that our dreams and plans to honor this space truly DO honor this space. The process of cleaning out and rearranging causes no small amount of upheaval.
There is energy in today’s gospel reading. Jesus has gone to the temple to worship for Passover, but what he finds there sets his teeth on edge and him in motion. The space has been dishonored by the idol worship of sorts- the exchange of goods over the presence of God. Jesus overturns tables; he sends money flying and animals for sacrifice are sent stampeding. The house of the Lord needs a cleansing. Whose place is this anyway?
The Apostle Paul will later remind the church in Corinth of this: “Do you not know that
YOU are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16 and 6:19) A sobering image. How, Disciples of Jesus, do our lives reflect the presence of God? Is a little spring cleaning in order?
Prayer: Lord, create in me a clean heart, and find your place in it once more. Amen.
